Creation of New Guru Lhakhang

Creation of New Guru Lhakhang

The Sixty-fifth Khenpo Jamyang Yeshe Singye possessed a text of the thirteen prophecies received by Terton Drukda Dorje. These prophecies included one predicting the birth of His Majesty the Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck. This prophecy spoke of one being born in the Wood Sheep Year in a place called Milk Plain Valley or Womdong in Wang valley, who would greatly benefit the Dharma and the Kingdom of Bhutan. It predicted, however, that a negative soul or dhamsi, one born in the Iron-Dragon Year, would try to harm the glorious Drukpa Kagyu teachings. This prophecy required that protective measures or dhokthap ceremonies be performed and a Ter had to be revealed in the area of Chumey, Bumthang. If the negative soul were to succeed, there would be a sea of blood in the Kingdom, but if the soul failed there would be many years of peace.

The Sixty-fifth Je Khenpo, believing Queen Ashi Kesang Choeden Wangchuck's newly born son to be the prophesied individual, therefor with great reverence, offered Terton Drukda Dorje's book of prophecies to Her Majesty.

In the autumn of 1965, Her Majesty sent this book of prophecies to His Holiness Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. His Holiness was residing at the Dechencholing Gompa for a week before leaving for Bumthang to become the head abbot of Nimalung Monastery at the request of the Royal Grandmother Phuntsho Choden.

When asked if this prophecy concerned the Crown Prince, His Holiness confirmed that it did indeed concern the Crown Prince and offered to perform the necessary prayers at the Dechencholing Gompa. Her Majesty requested His Holiness to perform these prayers in Paro in either of the two most blessed and sacred places, Taktsang Monastery or Jowo Lhakhang in Kyichu.

His Holiness performed the first Drubchen of Terton Jigme Lingpa's The Accomplishment Ceremony of all the Orders of the Eight Mandalas known as The Assemblage of Glorious Mind Accomplishment or Kagye Yongdu Thukdrub Palchen Dupa Drubchen at Jowo Lhakhang of Kyichu on the Divine Descending Day or Lhabab Duchen, in the 9th month of Wood Snake Year of 1965, for the long life and protection of the Crown Prince, as well as the peace and stability of Bhutan. During the Drubchen, His Holiness bestowed the empowerment of Ngawang Rinchen Barwa'i Wang on the Crown Prince Jigme Singye Wangchuck who was ten years old, in the presence of the sacred Jowo Shakyamuni statue in Kyichu Lhakhang.

The first two years of Drubchen were performed in Jowo Lhakhang with highly accomplished practitioners under the auspices of His Holiness Dilgo Kyentse Rinpoche, who acted not only as Vajra Master of the Drubchen, but also often undertook rigorous task of Ritual Master or Umze which involved long hours and meticulous attention.

In 1966, in accordance with the advice of His Holiness Dilgo Khyentse, Mayum Rani Choeying Wangmo Dorje and the Royal Grandmother Ashi Kesang Choeden Wangchuck built a new Lhakhang (temple) adjacent to the sacred Jowo Lhakhang. Thus with great faith and devotion, Mayum Rani Choeying Wangmo Dorje and Ashi Kesang Choeden Wangchuck fulfilled the prophecies of Guru Padmasambhava.

The ground breaking ceremony or Sa-Lang was held at an auspicious hour on the 30th day of the 3rd month of the Fire Horse Year of 1966. Where the shovel touched the ground, wo charcoal pieces, the size of a palm were discovered. One was a self-arisen face of Guru Padmasambhava outlined with gold, while the other was the self-arisen face of the guardian deity, Yeshe Gonpo. These two blessed pieces were later placed at zung behind the mural depictions of Ekajati, Yeshe Gonpo and other guardian deities located above the main entrance to New Guru Lhakhang.

His Holiness performed the preliminary rituals necessary for the construction of the Lhakhang including the Subjugation Fire Ritual Offerings and Removal of Negative Obstacle Prayers or Nen-Sek-Phang Sum.

His Holiness gave specific instructions on building the one-storey high Guru Padmasambhava in the form of the Glorious Subjugator of All that Appears and Exists or Guru Nangsid ilnon surrounded by a superb lotus throne with exquisite, delicate carvings of Lama Kusum and thirteen miniatures Guru Sampa Lhundrup statues. The Guru Sampa Lhundrup miniatures are based on the Prayer that Spontaneously Fulfills All Wishes or Sampa Lhundrup Soldep. Guru Padmasambhava had granted this prayer to King Mutig Tsenpo at Gomthang Pass when Guru Padmasambhava was departing to the Land of Rakshasas.
